Introduction

In 2018 the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) together with the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) participated in the June 4th Civil Society Hearing on Tuberculosis (TB) which was held in relation to the High-Level meeting on TB to be on the 26th of September 2018 in New York. On the June 5th and 6th both organizations participated in lobby meetings held at several country Missions presenting the case of the casual link between silica dust exposure and the onset of tuberculosis (TB), and the compilation of a statement in this regard. At all meetings we recommended inclusion of an action statement in the declaration as follows. "Commit to primary prevention in high-risk occupations by reducing silica dust exposures in mining, construction and other dusty workplaces, and implementing worker TB surveillance and infection prevention and control in healthcare settings"

On September 26, 2018 at the United Nations (UN) TB High Level Meeting country delegates committed to actions included in the TB declaration. IOHA was together with ICOH, OK International present at the plenary session and the multi stakeholders' panels.

IOHA would like to contribute to these working plans. To do so, IOHA  would like to establish a Scientific Committee (SC) /working group to help compile these working plans. This SC will be known as the "IOHA Silica/TB SC". The SC will provide a forum for IOHA members and other experts concerning exposure to silica.

The idea is to start up the committee with a first program (Mining - TB) relation and afterwards build this committee out to a Silica Committee with a broader scope. For more information please click here

Should you wish to volunteer your time and expertise, please send through a short CV/Resume to the IOHA administrator - Retha van Niekerk at the following email address admin@ioha.net.
