Wits School of Public Health Occupational Health Division (OHD) organizes
Two days short course Analysis of Occupational Hygiene Exposure Data (SPUH 0122)

Date: October 23 & October 24, 2017. Venue: Wits School of Public Health

The aim of the short course is to equip participants with knowledge and skills for appropriately analysing occupational exposure data. By the end of the course the participants should be able to discuss the statistical background of exposure data analysis, list and describe the pro's and con's of various data analysis tools, analyse data using a specific data analysis too( EXPOSTAT), and understand the constitution of homogeneous or similar exposure groups.

The course will have three parts: The first part will comprise of lectures on relevant statistical methods for exposure data analysis, with emphasis on (log-normal) distribution, imputation of non-detects, within- and between workers’ variances, and calculation of exceedance of an Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL). In addition, various exposure measurement strategies will be explained and the currently applied strategies in SA will be reviewed in the context of recent developments worldwide.

The second part will focus on the constitution of Homogeneous or Similar Exposure Groups (HEGs/SEGs) using various information sources. Examples of (Bayesian) hierarchical frameworks will be introduced, combining exposure models, historical data and expert judgement as informative priors during the constitution of HEGs/SEGs.

The last part will be ‘hands on’ in the computer laboratory with an introduction of Occupational Hygiene data analysis tools and further exploration of the web-based EXPOSTATS tool.

The target audience for the course are exposure science researchers and students, professional occupational hygienists and consultancies and DoL and DMR inspectors.
