SAIOH ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2015
The 2015 SAIOH Annual Conference was held from 28 to 30 October at the very spectacular Lagoon Beach Hotel – Cape Town’s Premier Beach Hotel – with the theme “Into the future with Occupational Hygiene – Harnessing Technology for Better Practice”. With a final programme that consisted of professional development courses (PDCs), keynote addresses, oral presentations, and a contingent of highly reputable international speakers, it was an undeniable success. However, it is not only the courageous speakers and the diligent delegates who contributed to last year’s successful conference. Praise must be given to the SAIOH Western Cape Branch, the SAIOH Administration Office and the ever-present and supportive exhibitors and sponsors.
A first for SAIOH was the online SAIOH post-conference survey
The survey results pointed out that the four most popular speakers as being Dr Ulla von Saldern (Universityof Osnabruck, Germany), Dr Aleksandr Stefaniak (Divisionof Respiratory Disease Studies, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, USA), Prof Johan du Plessi s(North-West University, South Africa), and Mr Steven Verpaele (Belgian Center for Occupational Hygiene, Brussels).
It has been said, by many, that one of the main reasons for any individual to attend a conference is for the networking opportunities and their associated benefits. The results from the survey clearly showed that this was the case, with most respondents stating that networking, the interaction with and exposure to international and national peers, and the transfer of knowledge, were the most valuable aspects of the conference. The Annual Awards Evening was an incredible event, at avenue with such a spectacular view that the guests felt like they were in a different country. Yes, there was the ever-present Cape Town wind but that is not what “blew us away”; rather, it was the fantastic, lively and animated atmosphere. The 2015 evening took on a different format from those in the past.Instead of the usual formal sit-down dinner, a smart cocktail social mixer, with a Marimba Band and a fire dancer were opted for, with snacks that were on fire (literally), accompanied by a good selection of Cape wines. It was a truly memorable evening.
